Kep is a small seaside city southwest of Phnom Penh.  Tourists go here because of the natural attractions to be found, and these include mountains, sea grass coral reefs, a tropical forest and sandy beach.  Kep Beach is only 1,000 metres long, but it is a popular seaside resort that enjoys sunshine all year round.

Kep was first discovered by the French in the 20th century who founded Kep in 1908 and built some administrative buildings in the area.  During the 1960s, Kep was transformed into a stunning seaside resort during the reign of Prince Norodom Sihanouk.  By the time Sihanouk became king, the city had become a hangout of wealthy folks, who built their own lavish homes and villas in the area. It is said that the name of the city was derived from 'le cap,' which is French for 'cape’ – a piece of land jutting into the sea or another large body of water.

If there is something Kep is famous for, it is seafood.  Some of the best crabs in the world comes from this part of Cambodia.
